History
Moms and Kids has been in existence for 40+ years. A stay-at-home mother, looking to meet other mothers and their children and hoping for a little bit of free time, started the group in 1974. Over the years the group has met weekly in various locations in Marcellus in Skaneateles. Our current home is at the First Presbyterian Church in Skaneateles. Moms and Kids was incorporated in 1988 and is formally known as “Moms and Kids, Inc.”
The group has been in existence for long enough that a few of the members in recent years were members as kids—when their moms joined the group in the 70s! While our name indicates that only moms are members, in fact, there have been several dads who joined the group with their kids in previous years.
In addition to the weekly co-op gatherings with the kids, Moms and Kids periodically hosts special events and fundraisers in the community. A “Little Kids Night Out” took place at Waterman Elementary School in 1995 and several puppet shows in following years. The group hosted a 5K race in Austin Park in 2008 and in 2010, 2011 and 2012 100+ women joined us for a “Ladies Night Out” at the Mandana Barn where the popular local band “The Mere Mortals” performed. In 2013 we hosted a "Pizzafest" and had kids entertainment and pizza from local vendors. In 2015 we raffled off Mother's Day Gift Baskets and in 2016 we hosted our "Halloween Family Fun Night" and viewed Hotel Transylvania, along with snacks and games. In 2017-2019 we have sold Gertrude Hawk chocolate bars. In 2020 we were faced with the Coronavirus Pandemic and unfortunately had to close our doors in March 2020. We came back strong in September of 2022.
